Test Preparation

  • TOEIC - Academia’s TOEIC class meets daily (Mon.-Fri). Students review the common elements of the test, review sample questions and take sample tests. Because listening comprises almost one half of the test, a separate Listening class also meets daily (Mon. – Fri.) to listen to tapes and interpret what is heard. Students who plan on taking this test are also advised to take the Comprehensive English classes that have a heavy reading component.

Academia is the only site in Hawaii for taking the monthly TOEIC test.

  • TOEFL - Academia prepares students in the four skills tested by the new TOEFL iBt: speaking, listening, reading and writing through classes that focus on these skills. The Listening class meets daily (Mon.-Fri.) to listen to tapes and interpret what is heard. There are Writing classes that focus on the various elements of good TOEFL essays from narrative and grammatical points of view as well as those that specifically target test essays.

Most Comprehensive English classes focus on reading comprehension and interpretation skills that are tested. Conversation classes, in all levels give students the opportunity to practice for the speaking portion of the test. Pronunciation classes, unique to Hawaii, help students to be understood and gain confidence in their spoken presentation.

  • Cambridge, ILETS, CLEP - Students interested in these classes should email us two months ahead of their arrival so that arrangements can be made.
